The Garage Games

35-39 RX WINNERS

FIRST PLACE

Female – Amy Bright Charlotte, NC

Amy

I have loved fitness and competition ever since I can remember. Being the youngest of three athletic girls I constantly competed with and tried to keep up with my older sisters in everything we did. Whether it was getting the highest score on a routine in gymnastics or being the fastest one to make it around the neighborhood on a bike, I have always loved the feeling of being active and striving to be the best you can be.  As a working mother of two, CrossFit works so well for me because it allows me to still have fun competing, while maintaining a healthy balance.  I also love the example that it sets for my two sons. I cannot imagine a better place for them to be than at a CrossFit gym where they can see people of all ages and from all walks of life, push themselves and reach their goals on a daily basis. Two years ago my husband and I opened CrossFit Northlake in Charlotte and we love sharing our love of health and fitness with all of our members!

I am a 41 year old wife to George and mother of 3 to Ashlyn (14), George (13) & Will (9). I work with my husband in a 3rd generation family business, USC Glass & Hardware in Mobile, Alabama.  I am a certified public accountant and former collegiate golfer at Spring Hill College. I was introduced to CrossFit by my husband and have been having fun with it for 3 years.  I go every weekday morning to CrossFit Mobile Midtown where my coaches, John Soutullo and Will Richardson, challenge me to accomplish things I never thought I would be able to do at my age.

SECOND PLACE

Female – Zuhal Mullinax Mount Pleasant SC

My name is Zuhal Mullinax.  I am 42 years old and I grew up and was born in Turkey.  I have been in the United States for 11 years.  My first athletic endeavor was my introduction to CrossFit by William Graham, the owner of CrossFit Charleston.  This was 6 years ago.  As quick as it started it almost ended with a back injury. The doctors told me that I needed to stop these kind of work outs.  I started rehabilitation work outs with Andrew Duffy, owner of Duff Training, and to great success.  I now train with both Will and Andrew and am competing again.

Male – Bill Woods Gastonia NC

THIRD PLACE

Female – Dawn Tratham

Dawn

I am a mom of 2 boys 19 & 10 married and living in North Carolina.  I work as a Reg. Dental hygienist in Salisbury, NC and my home box is CrossFit Rowan.  I have been in competitive sports for most of my adult life. As a child I was in the usual girlie activities, dance skating and gymnastics.   I started in natural body building in 2008 and won my first Professional Natural body building competition in 2010.  I competed in my first Pro show in 2012.  Soon after in April of 2013 I was introduced to CrossFit and fell in love.  I have been competing in local CF comps since August of 2013 and have had major highs and lows throughout.  I plan to keep on keeping on and look forward to more gains and success with CrossFit in the future!  I had a great time competing in the masters tour & appreciate the opportunities it creates for mature athletes.  I will definitely do it again in 2015.  Ready set go….

Male – Fred Cindrich South Salem NY

fred

At the age of 40 I was in the worst shape of my life.  I competed as a Division 1 Scholarship Athlete for a nationally ranked Lacrosse program but years later, unfortunately, I would often refer to myself as a has-been athlete.   With a ton of hard work and the help of Coaches Mike MacDOWELL and Caleb Callahan I’ve been able to transform myself both mentally and physically.   Today I am clearly in the best shape of my life.  Not only do I owe a debt of gratitude to the superior coaching at CFBH but also to a mentor and great friend Dave Hardie (#1 Nationally 2014 Garage Games 55-59) for pushing me to the limit persuading me to enter great events like the Garage Games.   I truly look forward to the challenges the 2015 Crossfit Open has to offer.  Special Thanks to the organizers of the Garage Games for holding a well-organized competitive event.

45-49 RX WINNERS

FIRST PLACE

Female – Kim Brown

Male – Mark Ziolkowski

markZ

I’ve been involved in sports and fitness for as long as I can remember.  I played High School Football and Baseball in Pennsylvania and continued playing Baseball and Rugby at the collegiate level.  I received an undergraduate degree from Seton Hall University and my Masters of Business Administration from Rutgers School of Business.  Prior to finding CrossFit, I competed and won several Natural Bodybuilding Competitions and completed 8 Triathlons. In 2014, I was ranked 103 in the world  in the CrossFit Open Masters division (45-49).  I am the co-owner of Absolute Strength Gym CrossFit-732 and Long Branch CrossFit.  I am CrossFit Level 1, Level 2, and Movement and Mobility Certified.  I attended the CrossFit Competitors Course, and I am USA Weightlifting Level One Certified.

SECOND PLACE

Female – Evaline  Delson, DC

Evaline

I’m a self employed chiropractor at Delson Chiropractic in Charleston SC.   I have two great daughters and I’m happily married to a great husband who’s very supportive.   I’m a level one cert and have taken outlaw coaching, mobility course and have been doing crossfit for about four years.   Unfortunately I’m going to have to take a year off and will not be able to participate in this masters tour event.   I had surgery to fix two broken vertebrae in my back that I sustained in an automobile collision when I was 38 weeks pregnant with my 11-year-old daughter.  Fortunately my body did what it was supposed to do and protect my unborn child and if it wasn’t for CrossFit, I probably would’ve had to have the surgery several years back.

Male – Jeffrey Roberson

Jeff

I started Crossfit 2 years ago at Crossfit NOLA, in New Orleans. Having weighed close to 300 pounds for many years of his life, he took to group exercise such as boot camps and kick boxing to slim down. Realizing he needed to add weights to his training, he found Crossfit and fell in love with the community there, as well as the competitive yet encouraging atmosphere. This was his first of many competitions to come.

THIRD PLACE

Male – Greg Roach

Male – Nick Maiorana Charlotte NC

I decided to start running to get back in shape. In 2000, I completed the Columbus Marathon in 3:53:48, some 20 lbs. lighter than my heaviest weight. Since then I have maintained an active lifestyle, but things did not take a turn for the best until the 2011 Metro Dash.  I knew this was going to be a different kind of competition, so I started following the suggested workout routine based on CrossFit. I ended up winning my age division that year and that’s when CrossFit started to be part of my life.  In the fall of 2012, I was introduced to CrossFit Harrisburg by Rick Guilbe and have never looked back. CrossFit Harrisburg has given me so much. My wife Teresa and I are now spending time doing something we both are addicted to (me more than her).  My goal as a CF-L1 Trainer is to be the best coach I can be. I really care about instructing our members properly and I want CrossFit Harrisburg to be known as one of the best boxes in Charlotte.

SECOND PLACE

Female – Thea Winick

Male – DeWayne Sapp

DeWayne

From elementary thru high school I was always involved in sports and exercise year round. Most skills needed came easy to me. I played baseball, football, track, wrestling and weightlifting. After high school, marrying early, and beginning a working career the passion for sports and exercise slowly withered away. Fast forward 30 years, 3 packs a day, 235# and bum knees I retired from my Heating and A/C occupation. This is when I decided it was time to get back in shape, and found out this wasn’t going to be easy. Now at 180# and after 5 years of diet, not smoking, knee surgery, Total Gym, P90x and Insanity, I found Summerville Crossfit “The Anvil”. I started competing after my first year, and with a new found passion, found that Crossfit has been one of the best things in my life especially when others say that at my age I actually inspire them when it’s the Crossfit community and atmosphere that inspire me.

THIRD PLACE

Female – Caroline Driscoll

Caroline

I am 53 years old. I live in southeast Alabama. I am married to a firefighter, which is how I started this journey. We have four children, aged 12 to 19. I work at Living Well Fitness at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama. I teach classes from Pilates, boot camp, to senior exercise. I love teaching. I love empowering seniors. I get excited when they tell me they are moving up in weight, or feel like they are moving better or getting stronger.

I have been cross-fitting at a box for almost nine months. Prior to that, we did workouts at the fire department. My husband is my biggest competition, and I have always tried to catch him. I was a bodybuilder and aerobics instructor 30 years ago. I have always been physically active, and I LOVE crossfit. I am getting stronger, faster, and feel more agile. I want to go as far as I can with this sport. My goal is to get to the games in California. My favorite workout is “Fight Gone Bad”, and I am looking forward to getting muscle-ups.

Male – Michael Bradley

55-59 RX WINNERS

FIRST PLACE

Male – Dave Hardie Westchester NY

Dave

I’ve been working out since May 2013 at CrossFit Bedford Hills here in the Westchester suburbs of New York.  I came to CrossFit with some background in running and triathlons, although my last races were in the mid 1980s.  A few years ago I found functional fitness with programs like P90X, and I discovered group training in boot camp classes.  But once I experienced the camaraderie and competition of CrossFit, I was hooked.
I started competing with the 2014 Open, and I have done several masters events in the Northeast.  A highlight was the Pennsylvania Pride event for the Masters Tour at Crossfit Inspire – a well-run event at a great facility.  The day was made more special because my wife competed for the first time, and we hung out with my buddy Fred Cindrich … who ended up third nationally in 40-44 Rx.
CrossFit has me in the best shape of my life – certainly on an “age-adjusted” basis – with the unexpected benefit of being able to compete with others and my own limits.  It has also given me a whole new group of amazingly interesting – and amazingly young – friends.  I love the masters concept, especially since daily WODs are with guys who are literally my kids’ age.  My only real complaint, is that my golf game has suffered from a lack of attention.

Female – Lee Monk

SECOND PLACE

Female – Phyllis Collier Augusta GA

Phyllis

I have been a group fitness instructor for over 20 years. I began CrossFitting with my husband at night as our “date” night, 4 years ago. I competed in my first Open in 2012. I finished 37th. In 2013, I finished 22nd. In 2014, after the Masters (55-59) Qualifier, I finished 11th and competed in the 2014 Reebok CrossFit Games in Carson! What a “once in a lifetime” experience! I was honored and humbled to compete alongside such incredible athletes! I finished 15th at the Games. My husband and I have both “drunk the Kool-Aid” and can’t get enough of CrossFit. I look forward to seeing what goals I can conquer next in our sport. I’ve learned never to say ” I can’t do_____.

Male – Mike Lyons, Troy Ohio

THIRD PLACE

Female – Anita Richardson

Anita

I’ve always been active but in 2006 I had a bump in the road, and was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I tested positive for BRCA2, but after a bilateral mastectomy and a hysterectomy, I stayed positive and very active. In 2012, my son, Joe Riley, (who is now a coach and athlete at College Hill Crossfit in Greensboro, NC,) introduced me to Crossfit, and I have not looked back. I am so grateful to be a part of CHC, and I’m having the time of my life sharing the fun with my daughter, son, and husband. Nothing has helped me more than this community of friends, athletes, and coaches. Everyday you all keep me mentally and physically healthy. Thanks Garage Games for the great event, I’m looking forward to 2015!

FIRST PLACE

Female – Mel Gumerman

I’ve been doing CrossFit for almost exactly 5 years and much to my surprise was a participant in the 2011 CrossFit Games.  I came to CrossFit after 35 years of sporadic lifting, long distance running, skiing, then an intense 10 year period just prior to finding CrossFit of bodybuilding and power lifting.  I love the camaraderie and competition, and the community of my box.   It is my reward for getting through a long day of work almost every day in financial services.

As the co-owner of an event marketing agency, if someone told me five years ago that I would  find my passion in Crossfit competitions, I probably would have laughed.  Crossfit came into my life a little over two and a half years ago just when I needed it the most.  It has changed me in so many ways.  I am a much stronger person, physically AND mentally for it.  The box has allowed me to forgot about all of the world’s problems.  I have learned to train on days that I feel like going into beastmode as well as the days that I don’t.  Being able to push my mind through the toughest moments in a WOD (and realizing that I am capable of surviving such challenges), has turned me into the calm, patient, and proud person that I am today.  I could go on about all of the reasons that I love Crossfit, but I think the #1 reason would be is that it makes me a better role model for my son.  I recently have added another title to the many that I already have, CF Level 1 Trainer.  I truly enjoy being able to share what I’ve learned and coach others (especially teens) toward their goals of positive life changes.

Male – Ronis Gutierrez Crestview FL

SECOND PLACE

Male – Jason Medsger

Jason

I’m an active duty military member and CrossFit maniac.  I’ve been doing CrossFit since about 2008 but didn’t get seriously into it until 2011 or so.  My first workout was Fight Gone Bad and I immediately hated everything there was about CrossFit.  How in the world was I supposed to do 100 pull-ups or this crazy thing called handstand push-ups?  We did them on the side of HMMWVs and most of us wore our helmets.  A Turkish Get-up?  You’re nuts.  Well, you don’t get much choice in your daily workouts as a military member so I was forced to return, day in and day out.  Finally, after 2 years of doing these workouts and consistently denying to myself the fact that I was in amazing shape, I decided to drink the Kool-Aid.
Just a note of thanks….this is my second event with your organization.  You and the Garage Games team have developed an awesome avenue for athletes at all levels to compete safely and enjoyably.  Most of us don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of getting to the games, but if we can do well in our own little part of the world, it changes our motivation tremendously.  I’m sure there is an unbelievable amount of work that goes on behind the scenes that only your team, and those that put on the events of course, witness.  Please pass our thanks to them as well.  To the end user, the athlete, we reap all the benefits you hope we do.  Thanks for putting all the effort into this program and the Garage Games as a whole.  You all are amazing!  I’m active duty military.  I know all too well how far a little thanks can go.  Here’s to ya!

FIRST PLACE

Female – Carla Akers Bryceville FL

Carla

I am a CrossFit Masters athlete, an avid long distance hiker on the Appalachian Trail, and a green-thumbed paleo freak who trains under the ForgingTheWarrior Program at Crucible CrossFit in Jacksonville, FL with Lance Scott and Colleen Lehane.
I found CrossFit, literally, by accident. Recovering from two spinal compression fractures in 2010, and weighing close to 300 pounds, I decided to take my health into my own control. CrossFit and paleo have truly been a lifesaver, helping shed over 142 pounds of fat in a little less than two years.  Now I compete around the Southeast in fitness events about once a month, have hiked over 600 miles on the Appalachian Trail, and have even done a few sprint triathlons. My biggest focus is on proper nutrition and encouraging others, especially older athletes, to realize nothing is impossible. Age has no influence on your personal ability to get healthier if you really want to make it happen.

I’m 57, and I’ve been Crossfitting since May 2013. My box is 10+ Crossfit in Little Rock, Arkansas.  I’d never done any lifting prior to joining Crossfit. The bar work intrigued me, but I started Crossfitting primarily because I could see that the cardio training it offered was superior to any other exercise program.  One of my favorite Crossfit moments was the first day I put two 45-lbs plates on each end of the bar, and deadlifted 225-lbs. I remember thinking to myself, “Wow, deuce and a quarter. This is where the big kids play.”   There is inspiration to be found in our box every day. Some days it’s when somebody nails a 10-foot handstand walk for the first time. Other days, it’s because someone finally got their first kipping pull-up after months of hard work.  Why Crossfit? It gives me the opportunity to challenge myself physically and mentally, and to encourage others as they do the same. What’s not to like about an exercise regimen that does that, and surrounds you with joyful and supportive—albeit incredibly sweaty—friends?

I turned 60 in July 2014. I have always worked out since I can remember. My diet has been more or less paleo and I juice at least once per day for the last 2 years. Ok, I admit I cheat some, but I’m 60 years old and deserve a nicety now and then. A friend of mine suggested I go to her cross fit box and give it a try. I went in April 2014. I thought I was working out in the gym I went to, but crossfit was much more of a total body workout than sitting in a bunch of machines or throwing around some dumbbells. My forth WOD at cross fit was the Memorial Day Murphy. Oh my, that was a killer and I was hooked. Tyger River Crossfit in Duncan,SC I learned that my body will do more than what my brain says it can…
