Water. It is at the heart of a daily crisis faced by a billion of the world’s most vulnerable people—a crisis that threatens life and destroys livelihoods on a devastating scale.Unlike war and terrorism, the global water crisis does not make media headlines, despite the fact that it claims more lives through disease than any war claims through guns. Unlike natural disasters, it does not rally concerted international action, despite the fact that more people die each year from drinking dirty water than from the world’s hurricanes, floods, tsunamis, and earthquakes combined.
• 783 million people in the world do not have access to safe water. This is roughly one in nine of the world’s population.
- 1.8 million children die every year as a result of diseases caused by unclean water and poor sanitation. This amounts to around 5000 deaths a day.
- Water-related disease is the second biggest killer of children worldwide.
- The weight of water that women in Africa and Asia carry on their heads is commonly 40 pounds, the same as the average airport luggage allowance.
- 443 million school days are lost each year due to water-related diseases.
- 11% more girls attend school when clean water is available.
- 40 billion working hours are spent carrying water each year in Africa.
- Households in rural Africa spend an average of 26% of their time fetching water, and it is generally women who are burdened with the task.
Good news is we CAN do something about it by raising awareness and the funds to provide clean water to a community in Africa.
Our goal is to help BEAT the water crisis by funding a water well in Africa. Together we can make a difference!
To help raise awareness DURING the event, we will be designing some of the workouts to let spectators see and competitors feel what it is like to carry such large amounts of water for long distances along with other hardships.
Matthew 25:37-40
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
