Oct 2012 26

The top six men and women (RX ONLY) will do the final WOD. I am hoping that if you make it to this workout that you are very familiar with the standards of these movements, and we do not have to labor over them. We will have a brief Q&A when I announce the folks that qualify. For now, it should be sufficient to say that these movements will all be performed at “2012 regionals standards.”

This event is for time:

20 Deadlifts 225/155#
20 Pistols
15/10 (women) HSPU
10 Hang Squat Snatch 115/75#
100 Double Unders
10 Hang Squat Snatch 115/75#
15/10 HSPU
20 pistols
20 Deadlifts 225/155#

15 minute time-cap.

Standards:

  • Pistols must be done with one leg extended in front. Which means they only way they can look is this: http://gymnasticswod.com/content/pistol. (Credit to Carl Paoli and his Gymnastics WOD site.) If you bring your leg out to the side a little, that is OK. But, you may not rest the unweighted leg on the back of your leg for support.
  • Hang Snatch may require some clarification as this was not at 2012 Regionals. The bar may be in the high hang or low hang position, so basically anywhere between the hip and the knee when you start the rep. The athlete must perform a full depth (hip crease below the knee) squat with each rep and stand up with control at the top for each rep to count.
  • Note that women will only do 10 HSPU and men will do 15.
  • The HSPU may be against a chain link fence. Be prepared. You will have a mat. As of now, no plates and abmats. But that could change if we need to use that to protect you from cracking your skulls. Be prepared for both.

If you have any further questions, email janicemarie@thegaragegames.com, or post comments on our Facebook page.

Oct 2012 26

What can/should you expect/bring:

Athletes may wear anything they want. You do not have to wear your competitor tshirt if you want to rep your gym.
Volunteers and judges are asked to wear the shirts that we provide so folks know you are someone that may be able to help them. You may wear any shorts or shoes you want, though.

This is an outdoor park. Check it out here: http://www.biloxi.ms.us/pr/parks/hiller_park.asp

There are nice shade trees, playgrounds, tennis courts, a basketball court, softball fields, ponds, and a disc golf course. So feel free to bring anything you think you would need to spend a fun day in the park: tents, chairs, food and beverage (no glass containers), sunblock, insect repellent.

A few other things you may need/want:

While there are restrooms at the park, they are “public” and are located in a “public” park. We have rented some additional portable restrooms and a handwashing station for you as well. With that being said, it is possible that we may run out of toilet paper. Come prepared!

Pets are allowed in the park. However, there is a leash law.

Fishing gear (and your Mississippi fishing license). We will be right near the Biloxi Back Bay.

Cash to purchase food from Big Hoss, get some swag from the Garage Games and Run-N-Tri stores, buy beef jerky from Warrior Powerlifting team, split the pot with Warrior Cross Country team, and/or to tip Dr. Jernigan and Dr. Edwards for working on your achy bodies.

Oct 2012 26

You will recieve your heats Sunday morning. Thank you for being patient and understanding. For now, I would like to share with you the preliminary schedule so you can make some basic plans. However, it could very well change as we finalize details and make last minute changes to heats, judges, etc.

Teams and Individuals will be traveling to events seperately. That means while teams are competing on one event, the individuals will be at another. Beginners will do the Battle Rush at the same time as the individuals, but will have a separate time slot for their other event. Beginners will be in the first heat of the Battle Rush with the Masters women. Please note: Individuals may find themselves working in heats with people that are not in their division throughout the day. DO NOT WORRY. You will only be scored against the people in your division. Mixing heats is the only way to get everyone home at a decent hour. Your heats will not be re-organized based on your rank throughout the day, either. So, go as hard as you can no matter who is working beside you.

Special note for teams: This is an “Open” event. With that in mind, we have made every attempt to make fair equalizers for all the movements so everyone can do them, have fun, and be as competitive as possible. This means that there will be some more advanced people competing against people that aren’t as experienced, strong and skilled. However, this does not make the competition “unfair.” Anyone can perform the loads and tasks (and substitutions) that we have prescribed.  In my experience, lighter loads and lower skill movements are a great equalizer in competitions. The comparison of the placements in the South Central CrossFit Open to Regionals was a great example of that in the women’s division last year. Please use this opportunity to show up with your “game face” and knowing that you have the chance to prove your work capacity and sheer determination and heart with your teammate!

Oct 2012 24

Dr. Eric has some great team WODs lined up for you!

NOTE:
1. These WODs are in no particular order.
2. You will not get videos. Dr. Eric will brief you on the WODs on the day of. Come prepared with questions.
3. If you have questions now, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/BiloxiBluesGarageGames?fref=ts.

EVENT 1:

Run N Tri Battle Rush

Thanks to Run-N-Tri for sponsoring this WOD, timing it for us, and awarding a pair of shoes to both members of the winning team, and all other divisions! Check them out here: http://www.run-n-tri.com/ and join their group on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/groups/runntricompany/?fref=ts. They always post sales, freebies, and have lots of fun activities in the Mississippi Gulf Coast and Mobile-area for the whole family on their group page.

The teams are divided into men and women, women/women, men/men. All competing against each other. For this event, we will either have 20# sandbags for the women OR possibly use 40# for both sexes. We will have all men Deadlift 225# for 20 reps at the start, if we use all 40# sandbags. This will be the equalizer for the women carrying a 40# bag.

EVENT 2:

Pistol Grip
While one teammate is holding a barbell, the other teammate will knock out pistols until the team has achieved 40 pistols. (Don’t worry,  it is OPEN division, so anyone can play. The sub for pistols is 150 squats, which can you do faster??) – the barbell is 185# for men, and 115# for women. – After this time elapses the team will work one at a time running the sled back and forth on the 50M sled pull area and perform 10 hand release push-ups then 5 power cleans (115#/75#). All work is done at one end of the field (judging ease). One athlete completes a round followed by the other athlete. Men/Men teams the sled is 70# loaded, men/women = 60# loaded, women/women = 45# loaded.

Event 3:

Hallo-WOD
A. 3 minutes to find a max clean and jerk. Women weight multiplier is 1.5. There will be two bars.
B. Within two minutes, they will perform a 2X400M (approximate) time trial relay (800M total)
C. Within four minutes they will start a burpee broad jump over. They jump as far as they can, but their teammate must clear them on one jump, otherwise they need to back up until they are at the point the person landed (loss of distance and time). The burpee jump over will be about 100M.

Event 4:

Hunger For Gear (aka Hunger Games WOD)
Pile of gear at one end of field, relay to get the gear for the WOD, barbell, 4-25# plates (men) or 4 (10# plates) – women, or 2 and 2 for mixed teams. Kettlebells (2 per team) and sandbags.

Run and get one piece of gear at a time, until the entire gear list is retrieved. Then:
One athlete at a time, switch as needed:
20 shoulder to overhead with 95/65
20 KBS swings
20 jump over plates with sandbag
30/30/30
40/40/40
Return all gear one piece at a time. Both athletes return to starting line for finish.

Oct 2012 22

Please forgive the phone camera work!! This is driving me crazy, but I AM NOT redoing them!! These videos were a one-shot deal!! Also, there doesn’t seem to be a place to post comments. Please send your questions about the standards to janicemarie@thegaragegames.com. I will answer directly.

Please note: We have not decided the order of these events or the heats. Further, to keep everything running smoothly, we may have to seperate the clean ladder and WreckFest WOD due to time and fairness. As soon as those decisions are made, you will know. We are working to get teams finalized.

Event 1: “Run-N-Tri Battle Rush”

You will run. You will carry stuff. You will jump over stuff. You will run no more than one mile, but no less than 800 meters. Winners in all divisions will get a cool new pair of shoes from Run-N-Tri Company: http://www.run-n-tri.com/. We LOVE Run-N-Tri!!

Event 2: Clean and Front Squat Complex Ladder

You will clean (power, split, or squat) a loaded barbell and then proceed to front squat it two times.
RX 205/115
Scaled and Masters 165/75
At least 10 bars on the ladder

Rules:

1. You may not hang clean.
2. If you squat clean the bar from the ground, that squat does not count toward your two front squats.
3. If you choose to squat clean the bar, you do not have to break parallel in your squat. However, you must have full depth in both front squats. (Hip crease below the knee.)
4. If an athlete is called out for a “no rep” on one of his/her front squats, the athlete does not have to start all the way over in the complex. He/She may simply redo the front squat.
5.  Athletes must fully lock out their knees and extend their hips at the top of every clean and front squat. If the athlete chooses to split clean, he/she must bring both feet back together and be standing with knees locked out and hips extended before moving to front squat.
6. An athlete may attempt to successfully complete the complex as many tries as time allows. (30 seconds-1 minute)
7.  If the athlete is unable to successfully complete the complex, he/she may start the tie-breaker movement: double unders (RX) and single unders (scaled and masters.)
8. If the athlete successfully completes one bar, but does not wish to attempt the next bar, he or she may not immediately move the tiebreaker. The athlete must first deadlift the bar. In the deadlift, the shoulders must be behind the bar with knees and hips fully extended.

Event 3: Classic WreckFest–You’ll know when you finish.

5 Shoulder to Overhead
10 Burpee plate jump
15 KBS
10 Shoulder to Overhead
20 Burpee plate jump
30 KBS
15 Shoulder to Overhead
30 Burpee and jump onto plate
45 KBS

Shoulder to overhead: RX=135/95# Scaled and masters=95/65#
Kettlebell: 24/16 kg for all divisions.

Rules:

1. Shoulder to overhead: Athlete may move the bar from the rack to overhead any way possible: press, push press, push jerk, split jerk. The only requirement is that the athlete’s arms and legs are at full extension at the top of every rep, and he/she must bring the bar back down to the shoulders at the bottom. If the athlete chooses to split jerk, he/she must bring the feet back together and demonstrate control before he/she brings the bar back down to the rack position.
2.  In the burpee, the athlete will be jumping to a plate. The athlete may not jump side-to-side. He must face the plate and jump forward. The hips and knees must extend for the rep to count.
3. In the kettlebell swing, the only requirements are to keep the arms fully locked out at the top and that the ear must show. The bell does not have to be vertical.
4. If an athlete dumps a kettlebell from the top, he/she will have an instant 10 burpee penalty that must be completed before moving on.
5. There is a 15-minute time-cap on this event. For every rep not completed, the athlete will be assessed a 1-second penalty.

NOTE: I originally intended this workout to follow the clean ladder within 5-10 minutes. That may change as we try to accomodate the surge in registrations.

Event 4: Four-minute Sled AMRAP–do not be fooled. This is NASTY!

5 power cleans
25 m sled pull
10 Hand release pushups
25 m sled pull

Power Clean: RX=135/95# Scaled and masters 115/75#
Sled: RX=90/45#, Scaled and masters 70/25#

Rules:

1. The athlete will have 4 minutes to complete as much work as possible.
2. In the power clean, the athlete must take the bar from the ground to the rack in one motion for each rep. The bar must touch the shoulders, the elbows must be in front of the bar, and the knees and hips must be fully locked/extended.
3. In the sled drag, the athlete must pull the sled past the line before moving on to the next movement.
4. If the athlete chooses, he/she may leave the harness on after it is put on. But, the athlete may not put the harness on before the event start.
5. In the pushups, these are standard hand release pushups. The chest must touch the ground and the judge must see a “flash” of the hands coming off the ground. The athlete may snake to get up in the push up, but arms must be fully locked out up top and knees must be off the ground.
6. The sled drags must be completed to count. So, if time is called and the athlete has not brought his/her sled past the line, that sled drag rep will not count.

We will announce the finisher WOD for the top six RX men and women on Wednesday. There will be no video standards filmed on this WOD. I will give you a hint of what movements you could see:

Deadlift
Pistols
Handstand Pushups
Hang Snatch (maybe squat, maybe power, maybe either/or)
Double Unders

____________________________________________

Thanks so much for your patience!!! We have toiled over and tested the individual WODs for the individual competitors and we have finalized them all with the exception of the sled AMRAP. Any changes in the other WODs will be due to equipment issues beyond our control. Changes to the sled AMRAP will be to improve the flow of the event and for judging consistency.

I will update the sled AMRAP on this page on Sunday. Also, I will post all WODs again on Wednesday, October 24.  At that time, we will have all of our heats and divisions set and all of our equipment needs will be clear. Thank you again for your patience. We are releasing these WODs only for the purpose of helping you decide which division is for you. I certainly hope that you will be understanding if a small change must be made from now until October 24 because of unpredictable circumstances or in the case of the sled AMRAP to improve the flow and judging consistency of the event.

NOTE FOR TEAMS: As mentioned, Dr. Eric is doing the programming for the team WODs. The team division is considered “Open.” This means that anyone scaled or RX will be able to participate in them. If you’re waiting for those WODs to come out, before you register your team, I can’t promise when that will be. Dr. Eric is at the Beast of the East this week in Durham, Connecticut. This is one of the largest competitions in the country and he will not be available until after it is over. The last day to register is Oct. 20.

MORE WOD DETAILS:

Event 1: THE RUN-N-TRI BATTLE RUSH
All Individual Divisions (RX, Scaled, Beginner, Masters):

Run through the park, jump over and under walls, carry sandbags. The distance will be more than 800 meters and less than 1 mile. Be prepared for surprises! Beginners will not carry sandbags.
Run-N-Tri will be giving the winners of this event in ALL divisions– RX, Scaled, Masters, Team, and Beginner– a pair of Inov8 running shoes! Thank you, Run-N-Tri! They will also be timing the event to ensure accuracy!  Check them out here: http://www.run-n-tri.com/.

Event 2a: Clean and Front Squat Ladder complex
Individual RX/Individual Scaled/Masters

All divisions: Clean (from ground) and then front squat 2x
RX Men/Women: start at 205#/115#
Scaled and Masters Men/Women: start at 165#/75#
There will be at least 10 bars for athletes to move through. Weights will move up in 10# increments for all divisions.  If I have the equipment, we will have 12 bars. You do the math!!

  • Competitors will have 1 minute OR LESS at each weight station (up to 10 bars in 10# increments) to complete one clean and two front squats.  This is a complex. To get full credit for the weight station, the athlete must complete the clean and two front squats in succession and without taking hands off the bar. Athlete may rest in front rack position between squats. There is a tiebreaker movement: RX=Double unders, Scaled=single unders. Athletes may power clean or squat clean, but it should be obvious that power clean is a better choice to save the legs. Bar must go from ground-to-rack with elbows in front of plane of the bar for clean. Also, legs and hips must be fully extended before athlete begins front squat. Front squats must have full depth (hip crease below knee) and full extension of hips at the top. If the athlete decides to squat clean, that squat does not count toward the two front squats of the complex.
  • If the athlete fails at any weight, he or she may decide to attempt again. However, he or she will only have a small time frame to reattempt as the clock will be running. Athlete may also choose to simply start tiebreaker movement instead of reattempting a failed rep.
  • If athlete passes one station successfully, but feels he cannot do the weight at the next, he does not have to attempt the clean, but he must at least deadlift the bar. After the judge calls the deadlift good, (hips and knees extended, shoulders behind bar)
the athlete may drop the bar and immediately go into the tie-breaker movement.

Event 2b:
Individual RX/Individual Scaled/Masters

Athlete will have 5-10 minutes to recover from 2a ladder, then he or she will proceed to event 2b. (Both 2a and 2b will count separately in athlete’s overall score.)

Classic CrossFit wreck-fest
5 Shoulder to Overhead RX=135/95# Scaled=95/65#

10 Burpee (instead of jumping up, athlete will jump on a weight plate–probably 45# for all divisions, but will depend on equipment available)
15 KBS 24/16kg (RX and Scaled)
10 Shoulder to Overhead 135/95#, 95/65#
20 Burpee and jump onto plate
30 KBS 24/16kg
15 Shoulder to Overhead 135/95#, 95/65#
30 Burpee and jump onto plate
45 KBS 24/16kg

15 minute time cap on this event. For every rep not completed, athlete will be given a one second penalty.
Athlete may press, push press, push jerk or split jerk.

Beginner Event 2:
Beginner Men and Women

We’ve got very simple movements in this workout. How hard and fast can you work while still keeping your form and thinking on your toes?

Athletes will have a stack of weight plates that they must move from Point A to Point B. Men must move (3) 45#s,  (5) 25#s, and (7) 15#s. Women must move (1) 45#, (3) 25#, and (5) 15#. Before each time the athlete touches a plate at Point A (starting point) he or she must do 5 burpees. This means the very first thing the athlete will do will be 5 burpees. Each time the athlete puts a plate down at Point B, he or she must do 10 situps. To finish, the athlete must run back to point A for final time. 15 minute cap.

Note: If an athlete can carry more than one plate at at time, he or she may do this to lessen the trips. Also, athlete may carry any combination of plates or in any order. Strength and strategy are required to excel in this event!

Event 3:
(NOTE: This WOD will be tested one more time before finalized. We are 90% on this one as we have tested it several ways.  Sorry for any inconvenience. Testing will be complete by Sunday.)

Individual RX/Individual Scaled /Masters

4 min AMRAP–short and NASTY!!
50 meter sled drag (25 m down and back) (RX 90/45, Scaled 45/25)
5 power cleans (RX 135/95, Scaled 115/75)
10 pushups (hand release)

Event 4:
Individual RX
The “Finisher.” The top six or eight individual athletes will advance to this workout. The details are a surprise until testing is complete. Expect a good test of skill, stamina and strength. The top athletes will be able to handle all the movements and loads in this event. This event will be final after registration closes.

Oct 2012 01

Please note: We are releasing these events on a very “tentative” basis. We are testing the WODs this week. I will post a FINAL version of these events by Wednesday, October 10. Do not expect drastic changes. The primary changes will be reps and loads to fit our time frames, etc.

Special Note for Teams: Team events will be released as “finalized” October 10 as well. Team events are for both scaled or RX competitors. The movements will be programmed so that everyone can do them. Teams of two for this division may be any combination of gender: male/male, male/female, female/female. All movements will be scaled accordingly for females. So don’t worry about waiting to see if you can do the work. YOU CAN!!

Special Note for Masters: Masters Division is 40+. Your WODs will be the same as scaled division. It is likely that you will compete in heats with the scaled division. However, you will be scored separately and every effort will be made to have you in heats with each other so you know who you are competing against.

Special note for all the eager beavers: I love you. I really do. If you love me back, you will please save your standards-specific questions when we announce the “finalized” versions of these WODs next week. This is merely a guideline to help you select your division. All the technical questions about standards will be released next Wednesday with  full descriptions. We will also release standards videos as time permits for judges and athletes to review.

And now, in no particular order, I give you “The Stars” of Biloxi Blues:

THE RUN-N-TRI BATTLE RUSH
All Individual Divisions (RX, Scaled, Beginner, Masters):
Run through the park, jump over and under walls, carry sandbags. The distance will be more than 800 meters and less than 1 mile.

Event 2a: (NOTE CHANGE  in RX from snatch to clean)

All divisions: Clean (from ground) and then front squat 2x
RX Men/Women: start at 185#/115#
Scaled and Masters Men/Women: start at 135#/65#

  • Competitors will have 1 minute OR LESS at each weight station (up to 10 bars in 10# increments) to complete one clean and two front squats.  There is a tiebreaker movement: RX=Double unders, Scaled=single unders. To get full credit for the weight station, the athlete must complete the clean and both front squats without taking hands off the bar. Athletes may power clean or squat clean, but it should be obvious that power clean is a better choice to save the legs. Bar must go from ground-to-rack with elbows in front of plane of the bar for clean with legs and hips fully extended before athlete begins front squat. Front squats must have full depth (hip crease below knee) and full extension of hips at the top.
  • If the athlete fails at any weight, he or she may decide to attempt again. However, he or she will only have a small time frame to reattempt as the clock will be running. Athlete may also choose to simply start tiebreaker movement instead of reattempting a failed rep.
  • If athlete passes one station but feels he cannot do the weight at the next, he does not have to attempt the clean, but he must at least deadlift the bar. After the judge calls the deadlift good, the athlete may drop the bar and immediately go into the tie-breaker movement.

Event 2b:
Individual RX/Individual Scaled/Masters
Athlete will have 5-10 minutes to recover from 2a ladder, then he or she will proceed to event 2b. (Both 2a and 2b will count separately in athlete’s overall score.)

RX: Jackie-ish
(VERY TENTATIVE–if changed altogether, it will be a very classic CrossFit tiplet or couplet WOD-low weight, higher rep with low-skill, monostructural, barbell and gymnastics components. Basically if you can RX most WODs at your gym, it is safe to say that you can do RX on event 2b.)

1,000 m row
50 Thrusters, 45# bar (both men and women)
30 pushups (instead of pullups–no bars in a park!!)

Scaled: Jackie–La Nina/El Nino (whatever floats your boat)
1000 m row
50 Thrusters, 45# bar

10 minute time cap.

Beginner Event 2:
Beginner Men and Women
We’ve got very simple movements in this workout. How hard and fast can you work while still keeping your form and thinking on your toes?

Athletes will have a stack of weight plates that they must move from Point A to Point B. Men must move (2) 45#s,  (4) 25#s, and (6) 15#s.

Event 3:
Individual RX/Individual Scaled /Masters
4-5 min AMRAP–short and NASTY!!
50 meter sled drag (25 m down and back) (RX 90/45, Scaled 70/35)
5 power cleans (RX 135/95, Scaled 115/75)
5 burpees

Event 4:
Individual RX
The “Finisher.” The top six or eight individual athletes will advance to this workout. The details are a surprise until testing is complete. Expect a good test of skill, stamina and strength. The top athletes will be able to handle all the movements and loads in this event.
